Every time he builds a dirty bed with the stained mattresses when he has the nice beds available makes me sad. You can always make building space in a settlement by dropping guns on the floor, or anything else, but guns is easy, and then opening the build mode and use it to put them in your workshop inventory. It counts as making space by clearing up debris, even though you put the guns there.
